Install a Printer - Star TSP100 Series on Windows (JPOS)

How to install a USB Star TSP100 receipt printer on Windows

Windows 7, Vista and XP are supported.

If there is already a Star driver installed on your terminal machine, please uninstall it before attempting to install the JavaPOS driver.

If your printer has been used previously with a different POS set up, please check dip switch 1 is set to the factory setting 'Star Line Mode' (not ESC/POS).

You must be logged in to Windows as an administrator.

With your terminal installed, but not running, follow the steps below to install the Star JavaPOS printer driver for your TM printer.

1. Note the Location of Your Java (jre) Install

Locate the directory in which you have your java runtime enviroment installed, normally C:\Program Files\java\jre6.

This location will be referred to throughout this document as <java>.

It is important, particularly if you have more than one java installation, to use the same one (i.e. your current active jre) throughout this install process.

2. Download the JavaPOS Pack for Star TSP100 printers

Before installing the printer, we need to add some JavaPOS files.

Open the downloads page at: JavaPOS Driver Downloads

Download and unzip the file 'JavaPOS Pack - Star TSP100 Series Printers'.

Copy the 6 files from the folder into the java external library directory which is at <java>\lib\ext.

i.e. in a default set up this will be C:\Program Files\java\jre6\lib\ext\

3. Install the Printer

Run the cd that came with your TSP100 Series printer and follow the install instructions. When asked, select 'typical' setup.

If you don't have the cd, the installer can be downloaded from the Star Micronics website:

(Get the downloads from the 'Complete Installation CD's' section).

These instructions were compiled using 'TSP100 Setup Version 4.0.0'.

After installation, turn the printer on and verify that a new entry is created in your list of printers.

4. Launch the TSP100 Configuration Application

Right click on the printer in your 'printers' list and select properties.

Click on the 'TSP100 Config' tab.

Click on the 'Launch Configuration Application' button:

Highlight the default emulation (Star Line mode) and click ok to start the configuration application.

4. Configure the Printer JavaPOS Driver

In the configuration application, navigate to the JavaPOS section and click 'Load JavaPOS XML Registry File'.

Browse to the location of the jpos.xml file which is in the user data at  ..\Bluestore Live POS\work\terminal\data\pos\.

If you kept the defaults during the terminal install it will be at:

Win 7/Vista: C:\Users\<your windows user>\AppData\Roaming\Bluefish Retail

Win XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<your windows user>\Application Data\Bluefish Retail\

(note that on win xp, the Application Data folder is hidden by default. To display it, open my documents and go to tools - folder options, go to advanced and click 'show hidden files and folders'.)

We now want to add the printer entry into this file so click 'Add New'.

Enter a name for your device, or accept the default.

The new printer will now appear in the POSPrinter section.

Highlight the entry then click 'Apply Changes'.

Click 'Check Health' and the printer should print a test output.

After successfully printing the check health output, close the configuration dialogue.

5. Start up the Bluestore Live POS Terminal

Start the terminal, log in as a manager, and navigate to tools - hardware configuration

Highlight the 'model' under receipt printer and press 'Change Option'.

The list of printers that currently have a jpos.xml entry are displayed. The Star printer that we added in the previous step will be normally shown as 'Thermal receipt printer'.

Highlight the entry and click ok to close the printer selection dialogue.

Change 'enabled' for the receipt printer to 'yes' and click 'save and exit'.

The printer can be tested using the 'test printer' option in the tools menu.
